What is Pain?

The word “Pain” is derived from the Latin word “poena” which means penalty or punishment.

Pain is described as being a sensation, hurt or discomfort that affects the body and mind and may cause feelings of agony of distress. Pain can be a throbbing, stabbing or jabbing sensation. Pain can also be an aching or pinching feeling.

A person who experiences pain has many symptoms such as weakness or fatigue, nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, sweating, constipation or diarrhea. Pain also has emotional effects such as mood swings, depression, anger, irritability, crying and feelings of suicide.

Pain can be either acute or chronic. Acute pain is severe and generally last for a short period of time and normally ends when the injury is healed. Chronic pain ranges from mild to severe, lasts for longer periods of time, and persists after the injury is healed.

There are several ways to treat pain. One of the most common ways to alleviate pain is with analgesics or pain killers.
